Cinema North West

Cinema North West holds an adaptation film festival every year where we take the works of an author and look at the film adaptations of their works. This year we are looking at the works of John Le Carré.This is obviously a very pertinent choice of novelist this year, with the recent release of Tinker-Tailor film, and it will attract much interest and attention from the new generation of le Carré fans.

We have, amongst many other talks, screenings and workshops, John Irvin ,the director of the original TV series of Tinker Tailor…who will be with us for the weekend and will take us through the filming of the TV series and Jeremy Howe the director of the BBC Radio 4 ‘The Complete Smiley’.

See below for the full listing:

Adaptation Festival is back!

Now in its seventh year, this weekend of film, talks and workshops examines the process of adapting the novel for film. This year the festival celebrates John le Carré and the many screen versions of his best-selling novels.

With the recent release of the highly acclaimed new ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy’ movie bringing le Carré to a whole new audience, this is a highly pertinent choice for this year’s film festival.

Showcasing six le Carré adaptations this festival will provide unique insights into the process of adaptation, with talks from those involved in The Complete Smiley radio series and the BBC ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ TV Series..

The festival begins on Friday 14th of October with a presentation by John Irvin, Director of the BBC TV adaptation of ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’. This is followed by a showing of the 1984 film version of ‘The Little Drummer Girl’.

Saturday 15th of October will see a showing of ‘The Russia House’, followed by a talk from Jeremy Howe, head of drama for BBC Radio 4. He will tell the story behind making ‘The Complete Smiley’ series, and the character that is central to le Carré’s work. The evening will see a showing of ‘The Spy Who Came in From the Cold’, followed by ‘The Tailor of Panama’.

On Sunday 16th of October there will be showings of ‘The Looking Glass War’ and ‘The Constant Gardener’. As well as these events directly showcasing or discussing the work of John le Carré, there will also be showings of ‘Dare I Weep, Dare I Mourn’, ‘The Deadly Affair’, and a family film.

Continuing the Cold War theme, we are taking this opportunity to draw on local war time experience and on Sunday 16th a panel of expat Germans will relate their real- life experiences of growing up in both East and West Germany.
