The long running saga regarding the future of St Mary’s community field in Glenfarne, which is used by the Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher GAA team, took a step closer to being resolved last Friday when a trust consisting of five people purchased a ground adjacent to the existing field.
The new site was purchased at a cost of €152,000 and it is hoped that in years to come, the site will be transformed into a sports complex that the whole community will be proud of.

With the proposed redevelopment of the N16 meaning that an alternative location would be needed, Cllr Sean McDermott, one of the trustees acting on behalf of the community, stated that last Friday’s news has brought “a lot of joy to the parish.”

The trustees of the pitch are hoping that the NRA will come back to them with an acceptable offer for the pitch. The fact that the threat of a compulsory order loomed large meant that it was important to secure a new sight.

With the new site in place, Cllr McDermott is hopeful that “rapid progress will be made” in finally gaining adequate compensation from the NRA and in establishing the new site as the new home of sport for the community in Glenfarne.

Cllr McDermott added that he has been talking to the Council on the issue and that they are aware of the recent developments. However, the fact that many people are on holidays at this time could slow down the process temporarily.

Last night the five trustees of the park, Sean McDermott, Sean Clancy, Felix McHugh, Gerry Finneran and Philomena Burns were to meet with a consultant to discuss plans for the new site.

A phased project is hoped to be put in place and the long term plan is to have a “sports complex for future generations,” added Cllr McDermott.
However, the immediate plan is to establish a playing field and dressing rooms on the new site.
