“Live in the Ballroom”
June 3rd, 2008 by admin
City Theatre Dublin and The Glens Centre Manorhamilton in association with The Rainbow Ballroom Glenfarne Present THE BALLROOM OF ROMANCE in an adaptation for the Stage by Michael Scott with Mary McEvoy and local Community cast – Performances 29th & 30th July and 1st August
THE BALLROOM OF ROMANCE – William Trevors’ short story made famous by Pat O’Connor’s film (1982) is set to become a stage show in the actual ballroom where the story was based, in an new adaptation by theatre director Michael Scott.
Shall we exercise ourselves….
…people came on bicycles or in old motor-cars, People who did not often see other people met there, girls and boys, men and women came from miles around in the hope of finding love and happiness or someone who will deaden the pain of “hard lives lived in the certainty of a deadening future. They paid Mr Dwyer and passed into his dance hall, where The Romantic Jazz Band was playing The Destiny Waltz…
THE BALLROOM OF ROMANCE tells that story by focussing on the life of one woman – Bride – on the last night of her youth and her final visit to the Ballroom of Romance. We will recreate the atmosphere of the Ballroom in its heyday – mirror ball and drapes, the audience sitting around the edges of the dance floor, men on one side, women on the other. Overhead rows of colored bulbs creating the atmosphere of these dancing days – now past. There will be live music, at the end the National Anthem. Of course the Parish Priest will be at the crossroads to make sure that unseeingly behavior does not take place on the way home…
The Audience will be asked to dress up in period clothes and invited to dance while scenes are played about them. Refreshments (Tea, orange and Marietta biscuits) will be served.
THE BALLROOM OF ROMANCE captures a disappearing Ireland in its last throes but moreover, tells a universal story of hopes dashed and dreams … compromised.
