GLENFARNE/KILTYCLOGHER 0-12
GLENCAR/MANORHAMILTON 0-9
Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher advance to the Intermediate Championship quarter finals after a 3 point win over local rivals Glencar/Manorhamilton on Sunday evening.
Despite dominating most of the game, Glenfarne/Kilty got a scare at the end of this GWP Intermediate Championship Group 3 clash when Glencar/Manor, who Lazarus-like, arose in the dying moments of Sunday’s evening’s game in Páirc Sean, to close the gap on their north Leitrim opponents to an uncomfortable degree.
The Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher men got on top in the first half and were able to dictate the pace of the proceedings for long periods. They enjoyed a particular purple patch as halftime approached during a spell when Glencar/Manor certainly was not at the races.
After their 23 points drubbing by Drumkeerin in their opening game, Glencar/Manor certainly came into the showdown against Glenfarne/ Kiltyclogher with poor prospects of success.
Nevertheless the Manor men managed to redeem their competitive reputations somewhat when they put Glenfarne on the rack for the final ten minutes of Sunday’s clash.
It was level pegging in the first 22 minutes as the teams traded two points at opposite ends. Alan Hickey shot over for Manor in the third minute and Fergal Clancy replied with a similar Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher score in the next minute.
Manor went in front again when Anthony McDonald put over a 7th minute free but Dermot O’Rourke levelled matters with a point five minutes later.
There was a let off for Glencar/Manor when Conor O’Rourke got behind their cover in the 18th minute but then deflected a possible goal chance inches wide.
A Michael Maguire point four minutes later initiated the best spell in the game for Glenfarne/Kilty as they shot five more points without reply in next seven minutes. Maguire added three further points, two from frees, while O’Rourke and Niall Clancy added a point each.
Before the break ,Ciarán Love replied with a point, which still left his side trailing by 0-3 to 0-8 at the interval. Alan Hickey shot over within two minutes of the restart to slightly reduce Glenfarne’s advantage.
But Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher hit back with three points over the next six minutes and reasserted their dominance. Barry and J.J. McDermott hit the target while Fergal Clancy tapped over a free following a Thomas McDonald foul on Michael Maguire.
Alan Sweeney got Manor’s challenge back on track when he put over a 43rd minute free. Michael Maguire hit back with a free conversion for Glenfarne four minutes later, which proved to be their last score in the game.
Glencar/Manor created some anxiety for Glenfarne/ Kiltyclogher in the closing ten minutes when they scored four points without reply. Sub Brian Gilroy initiated the fight back when he hit over a 26th minute point while Gary Hickey converted a free three minutes later and Mark Ryan shot over from play twice before the end.
