Senior League Division 2

Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher 0-9 0-6 Drumkeerin

A gutsy Glenfarne-Kiltyclogher outfit turned in a storming performance in the closing phase of Saturday’s doggedly contested Masonite Division Two Play-off game to overcome Drumkeerin in Drumshanbo.

Glenfarne-Kilty’s reward for victory in this tie is a place in the final shake up with Carrigallen, Glencar/Manor, Sean O’Heslin’s and St. Mary’s for the Div 2 title and promotion to Div 1 next year.

The vanquished Drumkeerin side will now go into the Div 2 Shield race with Aughnasheelin, Dromahair, Cloone and Ballinaglera, and the bottom team in this section of division will be relegated to Div 3 next year.

Thomas McDermott and Michael Maguire delivered injury time points that secured the win for Glenfarne in a game where their side avenged an intermediate championship quarter-final defeat by Drumkeerin.

However, the absence of County player Michael Foley from the Drumkeerin line up undoubtedly hampered their challenge in this game to quite a substantial degree.

Glenfarne/Kilty opened the scoring in the game when Michael Maguire put over a free, for a Hugh Harvey foul. However, Harvey made amends when he shot over six minutes later to put Drumkeerin on level terms.

Drumkeerin took the lead when Edward McTiernan tapped over a free at the end of the first quarter. It took another 14 minutes for the next score in the game to be registered when Richard McTiernan fisted over a point just before the break.

As the first half drew to a conclusion, inaccuracy proved to be a noticeable trademark of both teams as Glenfarne chalked up nine wides while Drumkeerin hit six.

Drumkeerin led by 0-3 to 0-1 at the interval and Ciaran White put them further ahead when he shot over within 35 seconds of the restart.

Glenfarne/Kilty began their resurgence when Michael Maguire hit over a spectacular long range point five minutes later. Barry McDermott and Maguire added points by the 40th minute, to level the scores for the second time in the game.

Drumkeerin was presented with a gilt edged goal chance in the 46th minute but Edward McTiernan, who got behind the Glenfarne cover, flicked his effort inches wide. Fergal Clancy put Glenfarne/Kilty ahead when he put over a free within a minute.

Edward McTiernan leveled matters in the 50th minute when sent his well taken free between the posts after Ciaran Clancy was penalised for taking a free too short.

The stalemate continued over the next eight minutes with Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher’s Fergal Clancy and Drumkeerin sub John Cullen swapping points.

But Glenfarne/Kilty found an extra gear and drove for¬ward for a deserved win with two Thomas McDermott points and one from a 45 metre Michael Maguire free.

Drumkeerin proved to be the more wasteful team in the second half when registering eight wides while the wides tally for Glenfarne/ Kiltyclogher in this period was three.
