Sean O’Heslin’s 1-13 Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher 1-4
Sean O’Heslin’s captured the 2006 Division 5 league title with a superb all round performance to defeat a spirited Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher in Park Sean MacDiarmuida on Sunday afternoon last. Both teams came into this game on the back of a superb league campaign and this was expected to be a closely fought contest. However the Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher men never got into this game as Ballinamore were dominant in all sectors of the field.
Sean O’Heslins opened the scoring with an Anthony Curran point on three minutes. Glenfarne/Kilty levelled maters two minutes later with a Daragh Keaney free. This was followed up a minute later with another free from Keaney to put the Glenfarne/Kilty men in front and this lead was furthered increase when Shane McLoughlin pointed immediately afterwards. Following this the game entered a rather scrappy period with both sides hitting a number of wides. However on eighteen minutes Sean O’Heslin’s split open the Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher defence only for Cathal McMorrow to save brilliantly from Aidan Galligan. A minute later and the Ballinamore men cut the gap to one point with a Shane Murphy score. The were level on twenty minutes when Peter Dolan pointed from play and they hit the front two minutes later with an Anthony Curran point. They further increased that lead with a Ronan O’Rourke point on twenty six minutes. At this stage Sean O’Heslins were dominating proceedings but were lucky to remain in front when a good move from Glenfarne/Kilty carved open their defence only from Michael Dolan to come to the rescue with a fine save from a Padraig Sweeney shot. On the stroke of half-time Cormac O’Sullivan pointed to leave the scoreline 0-6 to 0-3 in favour of the Ballinamore men at half time.

The second half started in much the same manner as the first half finished with Sean O’Heslin’s in complete control and points from Cormac O’Sullivan either side of a Peter Dolan free had them six points to the good as they threatened to run away with the game. However Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher got themselves back in the game on fifteens minutes when a well worked move finished with J.J McDermott finding the net. They really should have built on this but McDermott again and Michael Mitchell both seen goal bound efforts go agonisingly wide. Daragh Keaney cut the gap to two points on twenty minutes as Glenfarne/Kilty continued to mount a fight back. However Sean O’Heslin’s delivered the killer blow two minutes later when a superb move ended with Ronan O’Rourke blasting to the net to leave the Ballinamore men with one hand on the cup with eight minutes remaining. They followed this up with points from a Peter Dolan Free and points from play from Cormac Sullivan, Ronan O’Rourke and Wayne McKeon to ensure victory. Referee Tom Quigley then brought the game to an end and a start to the Sean O’Heslins celebrations.
Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher will be disappointed that they failed to finish a very impressive league campaign with a trophy. They never got into this game apart from a brief spell in the second half as Ballinamore out-performed them in all sectors of the pitch. They were best served on the day by Gerard Fee in the full back line, Fergal Clancy and Shane McLoughlin.
Sean O’Heslin’s matched Glenfarne/Kilty all the way throughout the league campaign and deserved victory on the day as they gave a superb team performance. Francis Dolan at full back, Wayne McKeon, Aidan Galligan, Peter Dolan, Cormac Sullivan, Adrian Gallogly and Ronan O’Rourke were there best performers on a great day for the Ballinamore club.
