Glenfarne 1-13 Aughnasheelin 2-7, Sep 6th, 2006

Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher captured the 2006 Minor League Final with a hard fought victory over a gallant Aughnasheelin side.
Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher got off to the perfect start when Aughnasheelin goalkeeper Colm McGirl carried a Padraig Sweeney shot over his own goal line. Aughnasheelin responded almost immediately to this setback with a point from Damien Gilheaney. Two minutes later Fergal Clancy restored the Glenfarne/Kilty men’s lead with a well taken point from play. Damien Gilheaney and Fergal Clancy then exchanged points before Glenfarne/Kilty hit a purple patch in which they hit five unanswered points in five minutes. Points during this spell from Padraig Sweeney, Diarmuid Clancy and three from Shane McLoughlin left Glenfarne/Kilty leading by eight with fifteen minutes played. Gavin Sammon cut the Glenfarne/Kilty lead with two well taken points from play. However points from Fergal Clancy and Padraig Sweeney restored the Glenfarne/Kilty lead and ensured they lead by eight points at half time.
The second-half started in the same fashion as the first ended with Glenfarne/Kilty dominating the early exchanges. Niall Clancy increased their lead on two minutes with a point and this was followed up and a minute later by Fergal Clancy with a point from play. The game entered a barren spell with no score from seven minutes but this was ended when Fergal Clancy pointed from a free as Glenfarne/Kilty looked like running away with the game. But the Aughnasheelin club are noted for their great spirit and determination and the expected comeback started with Damien Gilheaney hitting three un-answered points to cut the Glenfarne/Kilty lead to eight points. Padraig Sweeney steadied Glenfarne/Kilty nerves on seventeen minutes with a point from play as Aughnasheelin dominated the closing exchanges. A goal from Fergal Earley cut the Glenfarne/Kilty lead to six points on eighteen minutes. Fergal McManus put the game back in the melting put with a well taken goal after the Glenfarne/Kilty defence failed to clear a Damien Gilheaney free as the game entered injury time. However try as the may Aughnasheelin could not engineer an equalizing goal as the Glenfarne/Kilty defence stood firm and much to the relief of the Glenfarne/Kilty support referee Sean McCartin brought the game to send the Minor 9-a-side League title to Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher.
Credit goes to both sides for serving up a highly entertaining match played in a very sporting manner. Credit also to Aughnasheelin for the great spirit, determination and skill they showed in getting themselves back into a game in which they trailed by eleven points at one stage. But the day belonged to Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher who gave a great all round team display to clinch the title.
